Resources for current & former foster youth

When I was in the system, I didn't know half of what existed to help me. Here's a starting map — the kinds of support that are out there, so you know what to ask for.

If you're in crisis tonight

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — call or text 988, free and 24/7.
Crisis Text Line — text HOME to 741741.

You don't need to be in danger to use them. "I'm just overwhelmed" is enough of a reason to reach out.

Housing & the transition out of care

Many states offer extended foster care and transitional living programs that continue support past 18 if you stay in school or work. Ask your caseworker or an independent-living coordinator what your state provides — and ask before your case closes, because most of it isn't automatic. National groups like FosterClub and Foster Care to Success help young people navigate exactly this transition.

School, training & paying for it

There are education funds set aside specifically for people who were in foster care — federal Education and Training Vouchers, state tuition waivers at public colleges, and scholarships aimed at former foster youth. A financial-aid office or your independent-living coordinator can point you to what you qualify for. Being in care can actually open doors here that other students don't have.

Health coverage

In many cases, young people who were in foster care keep Medicaid health coverage until age 26 — including mental-health care. If you've aged out and lost coverage, it's worth asking your state Medicaid office whether you still qualify under the former-foster-youth rules.

Someone in your corner

If you had a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), they often know your whole story and will keep showing up even after other supports end. The National CASA/GAL Association can help you find local programs. Having one steady adult who knows you isn't a small thing — for a lot of us, it was the thing.
